The original plaza in front of the East Orange City Hall was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1928. After years of neglect, it was decided to update this area to bring outdoor activities and the potential for new uses to this very visible location. WCA redesigned the plaza as a focal point in this section of the City, to respect the historic character of the site, and to make it accessible to all.
WCA’s design accentuated Olmstead’s thinking, with paths and naturalistic plantings. The original fountains have been preserved as well as the historic beech trees that frame the building entrance from the street. New curvilinear paths with new ramps for the handicapped and new landscaping have been installed using Olmstead’s original designs as a guide. The existing monuments have been relocated to afford viewing along with new classic benches for quiet study, contemplation and just relaxation. New lighting has been added using classical fixtures based upon Olmstead’s designs so that the locality is bright and safe for its intended uses.
