The School of Architecture is a beacon in the City of Newark and a gateway to the campus. Studios in the sky, illuminated at night, represent the architecture dean’s desire to express the work ethic of the architect as a benefit to society. The building conveys the age-old architectural dialogue between the rational and the poetic. A regimented, structural regularity of studios and workplaces contrasts dramatically with the whimsical angularity of the monumental public stair. Gateway and beacon are made by a tall, slender extension to a blocky, half-century old building, Weston Hall, whose deteriorated exterior was re-clad in a new architectural language that joins old and new.
The School of Architecture is the focal point of a five building project encompassing 250,000 square feet. It includes the renovation and renewal of the distinguished, early twentieth-century Colton Hall for the Department of Civil Engineering as well as a center for the University’s Office of Student Affairs.
The School of Architecture is the nation’s fifth largest, ever-increasing in its distinction and known for the inventiveness of its programs. The facility includes a variety of open and closed studios, a library, an exhibition and conference gallery, and a “high-head” space for construction, structural and materials testing.
